Thrust ball bearings are designed to support axial loads in a single direction while allowing rotational motion. They consist of two grooved washers (raceways) with a ball and cage assembly positioned between them, providing efficient load distribution perpendicular to the shaft axis.
These bearings are commonly used in automotive transmissions, marine propeller shafts, machine tool spindles, and other applications where space is limited and pure axial loads must be accommodated. They are not suitable for radial loads and typically require adjacent support bearings in combined load situations.
